Recently, the news concerning the kernel flaw in Intel’s processors broke out. Two major security bugs called Meltdown and Spectre has been reported mostly in this issue. They might affect millions on millions of computers which runs Intel, AMD and ARM processor since 1995.
The serious security bug was firstly discovered by Google’s Project Zero team. On January 3, Google reported the full details on the security exploit.
Both Meltdown and Spectre flaws allow a hacker to access the entire memory of a vulnerable computer. Passwords, log-ins, files cached by applications and other important sensitive data could be read by a hacker. To fix this chip-level security bugs, Intel worked with OS vendors to roll out the kernel patches. Linux and macOS have already received the patches last month. While Microsoft was previously expected to release a fix on the upcoming Patch Tuesday, due to the critical effects to Windows users, Microsoft is rolling out an emergent fix later in the day. From the Verge, the security update is set to automatically roll out to all Windows 10 desktops today but Windows 7 and Windows 8 users will get the patches via the Patch Tuesday update on January 9. Now Windows users can learn more about the patch updates from Microsoft here.
Another possible impact of this security vulnerability, according to The Register, is that the fix for Intel kernel flaw could affect the performance of Intel processors and slow down the computers. However, Intel explained that the performance impact depends on the workload and average users shouldn't experience a difference.
By now Windows users should have received the patches for kernel flaws. But if you haven’t been offered the security update, Microsoft warned that a small number of antivirus programs make unsupported calls into Windows kernel memory. And these calls may cause stop errors (also known as blue screen errors) that make the device unable to boot. To avoid a problem that may cause, you need an Antivirus software which is compatible with this update to continually protect your computer. Advanced SystemCare Ultimate 11 and IObit Malware Fighter 5 run fine with Windows security updates for this issue.
A timely solution to system security issues can somehow reduce the risk of an unexpected loss.
